Information and communication technology has changed rapidly over the past decades with a key development being the emergence of social media. The pace of change is accelerating and evolving over time. An example is the development of mobile technology which has played an important role in shaping the impact of social media. Across the globe, mobile devices dominate in terms of total minutes spent online. This puts the means to connect anywhere, at any time on any device in everyone’s hands. The question is, how has the use of social media platforms impact our contemporary learning?

The question can best be answered by examination of the extent to which the social media is changing and trending. Consideration will have to be given to the approach instructors use and learners take in the use of social media in learning to establish their presence.  For example, by creating a private Facebook group, instructors can post assignments, lecture via Facebook Live, and answer student questions via comments and private messages. While face-to-face teaching has definite advantages, this is a great way to connect with students who would otherwise be unable to attend a traditional classroom. Such a class could also be used to augment the standard curriculum for students who fall above or below the norm.

The question of the quality of social media platforms for teaching and learning is of great concern due to the proliferation media platforms and their increased use for different purposes. It is also important to note different repercussion that social media has on teaching and learning. We examine the quality of social media and its impact on teaching and learning. In this contest we consider both interactivity and engagement of using social media in collaborative learning and its impact on academic performance of students.

Social media presence has been the norm among different constituents and many people seek to have their presence felt – measured by the number of followers they have in their social platforms. In terms of the effect of social media on teaching and  learning habits it is difficult to ascertain as many see their presence online as a means of magnifying their personality instead of learning.

There are many online platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, and Snap chart.  A scrutiny of these platforms provides a plethora of information on the quality of sites. Increase engagement by setting up a group on Facebook for participants taking a specific course and allow live chats through Facebook Messenger about specific training points before, during and after the training.

This will be related to reviews of challenges of social media on training and development which is the next step of review.

The key challenges for teaching and learning is how to keep the momentum going when students are on spring or winter break, or when they must stay away from school due to harsh winter weather and related emergencies. Posting assignments, projects, and discussions on social media can help students keep up the momentum in their school work and help you, as an educator, avoid having to go back and review quite so much material at the end of the period. This would be a good occasion to use a learning management system (LMS) that keeps track of student assignments and records delivery of student work. How to resolve the issue of social media consuming the time of many learners ever since the first computer and phone were created is crucial. Social media has been an outlet for many learners, but it has also become an addiction. If students can be aware of the reasons, they keep their screen opened, the reason of social media usage for teaching and learning will be beneficial. However, social media has caused many problems in our society, and it is time to examine the negative connotations of the social media.

Many argue that there is a link between heavy social media and an increased risk for time consuming, depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts. It does not matter how much time it takes into a social media strategy, there is always something distracting you from the real work. Due to not enough clear deliverables, it is important to constantly explain that the social media platforms are not just for browsing but something beyond. Social media is not just about posting and then waiting for results. Social is about Social. It’s about discussing and debating new ideas, looking for users to engage with and sharing feedback on your product/service.
